In a passionate plea, Labour peer Tony Woodley urged the government to resentence almost 2,700 prisoners under abolished IPP jail terms, warning them not to be on the wrong side of history as 90 inmates have already taken their lives. Despite this, prisons minister James Timpson stated the government will not support resentencing, proposing a refreshed IPP action plan which has been criticized by campaigners as inadequate. Liberal Democrat peer Sarah Ludford highlighted cases of injustice, including James Lawrence who remains in prison 18 years after a minor offense.
