Israel has escalated its offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, resulting in over a million people being displaced and more than 900 killed. Displaced individuals from southern Lebanon are not allowed to return home until the IDF dismantles Hezbollah’s infrastructure in the region. The conflict began when Hezbollah launched missiles into northern Israel to support Iran, which was under US-Israeli attack. Israel responded with hundreds of strikes in Lebanon, targeting both Hezbollah strongholds and civilian areas. In Beirut, a sweeping evacuation order was issued, covering nearly half of the capital. Additionally, the IDF ordered the evacuation of everyone living south of the Zahrani river in southern Lebanon. Sky News estimates that two million people, a third of Lebanon’s population, were affected by evacuation orders due to the destruction of bridges across the Litani river. The IDF has been targeting these bridges, alleging they were used by Hezbollah. International human rights lawyer Geoffrey Nice KC criticized the orders as causing panic and potentially being unlawful. Israel’s defense secretary stated that those fleeing southern Lebanon will not be allowed to return until the safety of northern residents is guaranteed. Israel aims to remove Hezbollah from the region.
