Rising in Kazakhstan’s Alatau region, the $800 million Alatau Iconic Complex is set to redefine the city’s skyline by 2029. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the development features two wedge-shaped towers, the tallest reaching 272 meters, making it the highest building in southern Kazakhstan. The project will encompass a mix of office spaces, luxury apartments, and a hotel, all situated within a green, three-storey podium that promotes community engagement through shops and cultural spaces. Construction is already underway, with major excavation scheduled to commence in May, ahead of the Asian Winter Games, which will now be hosted in Almaty. The new city aims to accommodate 1.87 million residents and attract 4 million tourists annually, serving as a crucial hub in the New Silk Roads initiative linking Central Asia to Europe and China.

Why It Matters

Kazakhstan, the ninth largest country globally, has invested significantly over the past two decades to modernize infrastructure and enhance its economic standing. The Alatau Iconic Complex is part of broader efforts to transform the region into a vibrant urban center while improving international connectivity. The project is not only a major architectural endeavor but also aims to address regional challenges such as earthquake risks through advanced engineering solutions. This initiative reflects Kazakhstan’s ambitions to elevate its global profile amidst ongoing concerns regarding its human rights record.
