Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old Mexican influencer with over 113,000 followers, was fatally shot while livestreaming on Tuesday; the case is being investigated under femicide protocols due to its gender-related nature. Femicide, defined as gender-related killings of women, is a rising concern globally, particularly in Latin America, where Mexico ranks fourth in rates, with 852 cases in 2023. Despite a slight decrease in femicide rates in Mexico, the issue remains critical, with underreporting prevalent and areas like Morelos experiencing the highest rates of violence against women.
