Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has launched a multibillion-dollar programme to provide free meals to 570,000 people on its opening day, aiming to reach 82.9 million by 2029. The initiative, which includes meals for schoolchildren and pregnant women, has faced criticism for its cost of $28bn over five years but is defended by Prabowo as a strategic move to combat malnutrition and boost the economy. The government and military are working together to prepare and distribute meals, with plans to expand the number of recipients to 3 million by March.
