The Anindilyakwa community of Australia has gifted 12 dadikwakwa-kwa shell dolls to Manchester Museum, emphasizing the importance of play with these culturally significant artifacts, which represent a “beautiful friendship” cultivated over 70 years and 9,000 miles. In 2023, the museum returned 174 items, including boomerangs and spears, to the community, fostering a collaborative exhibition titled “Anindilyakwa Arts: Stories from our Country,” which breaks away from colonial narratives. The dolls are viewed as living entities that carry ancestral spirits, highlighting the community’s commitment to cultural transmission and connection.
