Uttawar, India — In November 1976, during India’s national emergency, Mohammad Deenu chose to stay in his village as police rounded up men for forced sterilisation, a measure heavily influenced by global financial backing. Now in his 90s, Deenu reflects on the sacrifices made by him and his friends, saving their village from further hardships, as the scars of that coercive programme still linger 50 years later.

Explain It To Me Like I’m 5: In a small village in India, a brave man named Mohammad Deenu stayed to help his friends when the police came to take them away for a surgery that would stop them from having children, and he believed that their sacrifice would protect the village for the future.
