Jordan and Egypt are trying to dissuade President Trump from forcing them to take in Palestinians from Gaza by offering to work together on rebuilding Gaza and expanding humanitarian aid efforts, in a strategy to buy time and avoid destabilization. Jordan’s King Abdullah made a symbolic gesture of taking in 2,000 Palestinian children with illnesses, while Egypt proposed a $20 billion plan for rebuilding Gaza without displacing Palestinians. Despite pushback from Arab leaders, Trump remains firm on his proposal to “own” Gaza and develop it into a tourist destination, but has softened threats to cut aid to Jordan and Egypt.
