Thai authorities seized 238 tons of illegally imported electronic waste from the U.S. at Bangkok’s port, one of the largest hauls this year. The waste, falsely declared as mixed metal scrap, included hazardous materials like circuit boards, raising environmental concerns and prompting potential charges against the importers. The Basel Convention, aimed at managing hazardous waste in developing countries, highlights the growing global electronic waste crisis, with only 22% properly recycled in 2022, a number expected to decline further by 2030.
