The Republican Attorney General of Iowa has accused Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx of breaking state law by refusing to comply with some Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests, potentially risking the loss of all state funding. Although Marx’s office has honored all 21 detainer requests received since 2018, AG Brenna Bird threatened to sue unless he issues a public apology for his Facebook post criticizing unconstitutional detainer requests, leading to a deepening divide over immigration policy within local law enforcement agencies in the United States.
