Human Rights Atrocities Mount in Sudan as War Spirals, U.N. Says

The United Nations report details the horrors of Sudan’s civil war, including bombings on houses, markets, and bus stations that have killed civilians, ethnic violence in Darfur, and a video showing soldiers parading with decapitated heads of students. The conflict started as a power struggle between the military and Rapid Support Forces in April 2023 but has escalated into a nationwide crisis. Both sides have committed atrocities against civilians, with foreign powers backing them with advanced weapons.

Despite warnings of famine and displacement of millions, international attention has been focused on other conflicts. Aid efforts have fallen short, and attacks on convoys have hindered relief deliveries. The U.N. report highlights detainment, torture, and sexual assault of civilians, with ethnic African groups being targeted by R.S.F. forces. The death toll is estimated to be around 14,600, although it is likely higher due to difficulties in collecting data.

As the conflict intensifies, foreign involvement has increased, with the Emirates supplying armed drones to the R.S.F. The Sudanese military has retaliated with barrel bombs, resulting in more civilian casualties. The war has taken dramatic turns in recent months, with the army reclaiming territory from the R.S.F. and seeking support from Iran. Peace talks appear to be faltering, with no significant progress made so far.

Efforts to broker a cease-fire have been unsuccessful, and the situation continues to deteriorate. The R.S.F. leader has been seen touring African nations, while back-channel talks have yielded little results. Despite calls for peace, the military remains focused on fighting. The future of Sudan remains uncertain as the conflict persists.
