Firefighters north of Los Angeles were battling a rapidly spreading brush fire, the Hughes fire, which had burned over 10,000 acres and led to the closure of parts of Interstate 5. Red flag warnings were in effect due to dangerous fire weather conditions, with wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour posing a significant threat. The fire, which prompted evacuation orders for over 50,000 people, was 14 percent contained by Thursday morning, while a smaller blaze, the Sepulveda fire, near the Getty Museum, had been stopped.
