A massive underwater volcano, the Axial Seamount, located 300 miles off the Oregon coast, is showing signs of an imminent eruption, with magma accumulating beneath its mile-wide surface. Scientists have noted significant swelling of the seafloor, indicating that an eruption could occur soon; the last eruption in 2015 triggered around 8,000 earthquakes. While there is an increase in seismic activity, experts believe that any underwater explosion will not pose a threat to people on land due to the volcano’s depth and distance from the coast.
