US and Israel’s Impact on Iran’s Medicines and Vaccines

The United States and Israel have carried out multiple attacks on medical facilities in Iran, including the Pasteur Institute in Tehran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian appealed to international health organizations to respond to these attacks. At least 2,076 people have been killed and 26,500 wounded in Iran since the attacks began in February. The Pasteur Institute, targeted in the recent attacks, is a key research center in Iran, founded in 1920. Other healthcare facilities in Iran, such as the Red Crescent warehouse, Tofigh Daru pharmaceutical company, Delaram Sina Psychiatric Hospital, Ali Hospital, and Gandhi Hospital, have also been hit. International humanitarian law prohibits attacks on health establishments, including hospitals.

Why It Matters:
The attacks on healthcare facilities in Iran, including the prestigious Pasteur Institute, have resulted in numerous casualties and damage. This not only impacts the ability of these facilities to provide essential medical services to the Iranian people but also raises concerns about violations of international humanitarian law. The targeting of healthcare facilities in a conflict zone like Iran can have severe consequences for the delivery of health services and the safety of health workers and civilians. The international community must address these attacks to ensure the protection of medical facilities and personnel during times of conflict. After months of negotiations, the United States and Iran have finally reached a deal to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement. The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), aims to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Both parties have expressed optimism about the agreement, with the U.S. highlighting the importance of diplomacy in addressing global security challenges.

Why It Matters

The revival of the JCPOA is significant as it marks a crucial step towards de-escalating tensions in the Middle East and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The agreement not only promotes stability in the region but also opens the door for further diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Iran. Additionally, the deal has implications for global non-proliferation efforts and demonstrates the effectiveness of multilateral diplomacy in addressing complex security challenges.
