How George Wendt's Norm From CHEERS Inspired One of STAR TREK’s Most Lovable Background Characters

Morn, the walrus-faced alien from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, was inspired by George Wendt’s character Norm from Cheers. Played by Mark Allen Shepherd, Morn appeared in 93 episodes, silently embodying a role similar to Norm, as characters spoke of him being chatty and humorous despite never hearing him speak. Although the writers attempted to give Morn dialogue, it was cut, and his memorable moments, like faking his death in the Season 6 episode “Who Mourns for Morn?”, solidified his legacy as a beloved background character and tribute to bar culture.
