Karen O’Brien, a 52-year-old woman from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, suffered third-degree burns after her seven-year-old hot water bottle exploded, causing severe skin damage that required hospital treatment. Doctors at Leicester Royal Infirmary Hospital removed layers of damaged skin to prevent infection, leaving O’Brien with a large scar and permanent skin discolouration. O’Brien is now urging others to avoid using old hot water bottles and to check the age of their bottles regularly to prevent similar accidents.
