Former Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai testified at his national security trial that he met with U.S. officials Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo during the 2019 anti-government protests but did not ask them to take action. Lai faces life in prison if convicted of colluding with foreign forces and issuing seditious publications. The case is viewed as a test of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong under Beijing’s national security law.
