Former publisher Jimmy Lai denied asking a colleague to draft a list of potential sanction targets during his national security trial in Hong Kong, where he faces charges of colluding with foreign forces and issuing seditious publications. Lai explained he had copied and pasted a message he received from a person he suspected was connected with the White House, without thoroughly reading it. The trial also revealed Lai reminded his staff not to go against former President Trump in 2020, indicating his newspaper’s struggle under the national security law but denying any direct communication with Trump.
