Alina Burns, an 18-year-old member of the far-right group Patriotic Alternative, has pleaded guilty to attempted murder after attacking Mohammed Mahmoodi, a 27-year-old Iranian Kurd, with an axe outside a barber shop in Bristol. The incident occurred in August 2022, during which Mahmoodi narrowly avoided serious injury. Burns was apprehended by police nearby, who discovered a scalpel and several darts in her possession. In her communications, she expressed violent intentions, stating her desire to “cut his neck” and shared disturbing views advocating for the extermination of Jews and Muslims in Britain. Burns admitted to purchasing the axe with the intent to kill Mahmoodi and was found to have written about Adolf Hitler and other violent ideologies in her diaries.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the growing concern over far-right extremism and violence in the UK. The Patriotic Alternative is known for its racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric, contributing to a troubling landscape of hate-driven ideology. The incident underscores the potential for real-world violence stemming from extremist beliefs, as seen in other cases involving young individuals being radicalized. Such attacks provoke essential discussions on the effectiveness of current measures against hate groups and the need for increased vigilance to prevent similar acts of violence in the future.
