Half of the world’s population lives in countries where elections took place this year, with only around half of them being considered free and fair. Political scientist Francis Fukuyama’s idea of liberal democracy as the inevitable end point of history has not materialized, as democracy has been on the decline since the early 2000s, with some major countries experiencing substantial weakening of democratic institutions. The year 2024 saw the largest number of people ever being able to vote in elections, highlighting the global importance of democracy even as challenges to its principles persist.
