UK homeowners flock to heat pumps but numbers still well below targets

The number of heat pump installations in UK homes and small businesses increased by 43% last year, reaching almost 60,000 certified installations in 2024, but still falls short of the target set by the previous government of 600,000 installations per year by 2028. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) reported over 275,000 certified heat pump installations in total, with initiatives such as the boiler upgrade scheme and home energy grants playing a key role in accelerating uptake. Additionally, there were over 260,000 certified small-scale renewables and clean energy installations in UK homes and small businesses in 2024, including solar panels and battery storage, marking a 7% increase from the previous year and surpassing the two million mark in total installations.
