President Jimmy Carter’s presidency was overshadowed by the Iranian Hostage Crisis, which began in November 1979 when Iranian students seized the US Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. Despite efforts, including a failed rescue mission, Carter was unable to secure their release. The crisis played a significant role in his defeat by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election, but Carter was seen as a hero by some of the hostages he helped free.
