Tarique Rahman has been sworn in as Bangladesh’s 11th prime minister along with his 49-member cabinet, five days after his party, the BNP, won the elections. The cabinet includes Nurul Haque Nur and Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, who were prominent in the student-led uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Nur gained fame during the 2018 antijob-quota movement, while Saki is a left-leaning leader. Both are first-time parliamentarians not from the BNP. Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile in London. Nur and Saki were appointed to the cabinet as recognition of their contributions to the July 2024 uprising against Hasina’s regime.
