A recent cybersecurity incident that the City of Hamilton has been dealing with since last month has been officially identified as a ransomware attack.
The city became aware of the attack on Feb. 25.
During a media briefing on Monday, City manager Marnie Cluckie stated that they do not believe any personal data or information has been breached.
Ransomware is a type of malware that locks important digital information until a ransom is paid.
Cluckie did not disclose whether a ransom was given, only mentioning that the staff will prioritize the city’s best interests.
Several services have been impacted, such as online payment systems, and there is currently no set timeline for when operations will return to normal.
