In a policy shift, U.S. and Hamas say they're in direct talks on hostages

The United States engaged in direct talks with Hamas regarding the release of several American-Israeli dual citizens taken hostage during attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. This marks the first known direct engagement between the U.S. and Hamas since the group was designated a terrorist organization in 1997. The talks, which began in January, are ongoing, and the U.S. special envoy for hostage affairs has been involved in the discussions. Hamas has indicated willingness to discuss hostages with U.S. citizenship and other issues as well. There are currently 59 hostages still being held in Gaza, with five having U.S. citizenship.
