Fiery lava seen flowing from the volcano near the capital as disaster agency issues warning to nearby residents.
Guatemalan authorities have evacuated over 594 residents from five communities near the Volcan de Fuego, which erupted, spewing gas and ash up to 7 km into the sky, prompting the suspension of classes at 39 schools. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reported that the volcanic activity is expected to last 40 hours, potentially affecting air navigation due to ash clouds. This volcano, one of Central America’s most active, previously caused significant casualties in 2018, highlighting ongoing risks to nearby communities.
