Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow on Groundhog Day 2026 Implications for winter weather

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow during this year’s Groundhog Day celebration, predicting six more weeks of winter. Thousands gather each February 2 at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, a tradition dating back to 1887. Although Phil has made 107 winter predictions and only 21 calls for an early spring, NOAA notes his accuracy is around 30%, ranking him 17th among other weather-prognosticating animals.
