Twenty-five Canadians have been charged with defrauding American seniors of over $21 million in a “grandparent scam.” The scheme involved pretending to be a relative in need of money for bail after a car crash, with victims being coerced into sending money to individuals posing as bail bondsmen. The suspects operated call centers in Montreal and used technology to make calls appear as though they were coming from the U.S. Five of the defendants are also accused of money laundering.
