“Grand Theft Hamlet” is a documentary that follows Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, two London actors who staged a production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” entirely within the universe of Grand Theft Auto Online. The film explores their struggles and successes in mounting a virtual production, blending high art with low art in a surreal and absurdist manner. Despite the challenges, the project ultimately brings the actors together and challenges perceptions of online gaming as isolating. The experiment culminates in a successful live show and awards recognition, showcasing the unlikely but successful fusion of theater and video games.
