In western Mali, at least 43 people, mostly women, were killed in an informal gold mine collapse near Kéniéba in the Kayes region. The women were searching for gold scraps in open-pit areas when the earth collapsed around them. Artisanal mining in West Africa is common, but dangerous, with frequent deadly accidents due to unregulated methods and unsafe conditions.
