Dominique Pelicot, convicted of rape and orchestrating a decade-long campaign of abuse against his ex-wife Gisèle Pelicot, has decided not to appeal his 20-year prison sentence in order to spare her further trauma. Seventeen of the 50 other men found guilty in the case have chosen to appeal their sentences. Gisèle Pelicot’s bravery in speaking out against her abusers has sparked a national conversation about rape culture in France.
