Germany appoints new finance minister as pressure for quick snap elections mounts

Jörg Kukies has been appointed as Germany’s new finance minister, replacing Christian Lindner who was sacked by Chancellor Olaf Scholz due to alleged lack of concern for the common good. The dissolution of the ruling coalition, which included the SPD, FDP, and Green party, was triggered by Lindner’s dismissal, leading to pressure on Scholz to call for a confidence vote and snap elections. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also dismissed the justice and education ministers, both FDP members, while Minister Volker Wissing will take on the additional role of justice minister.
