German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed disappointment over the heavy loss of his centre-left Social Democrats in the national elections, calling the result “poor” and taking responsibility for it. Scholz congratulated conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, whose party emerged victorious. The defeat was described as “bitter” by Scholz during his address to SPD party members in Berlin.
