A new study in the journal Cell Genomics reveals that a Neanderthal named Thorin, who lived up to 42,000 years ago, likely led an isolated life with a significant amount of inbreeding. Researchers led by Ludovic Slimak analyzed a whole-genome sequence extracted from one of Thorin’s molars, shedding light on the genetic makeup of this ancient individual. The findings provide insight into the unique genetic history of Thorin and Neanderthals as a whole.
