SINGAPORE: Since Singapore’s May 3 polls were called, there has been a surge in the number of General Election-related online videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. CNA detected 73 such videos posted between Apr 15 and Apr 19, surpassing the 64 posted in the previous month, all on TikTok. Despite a new law banning digitally manipulated content misrepresenting candidates, 11 of these videos potentially violate this law, prompting the Ministry of Digital Development and Information to monitor online activity closely.

WHAT’S OUT THERE
CNA monitors a variety of TikTok accounts that generate AI videos related to local political content, with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong appearing in 7 out of 11 problematic videos. The most popular video features an AI-generated portrait of Mr. Wong and has received over 70,000 views. The rise of AI-generated content raises concerns about misinformation during the election period as the ministry remains vigilant against election interference through prohibited content.
