Gambian victims seek justice beyond reparations
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A survivor of a 2000 shooting in The Gambia, Yusupha Mbye, has been left paralyzed and dependent on his family for care for 26 years. The shooting, carried out by paramilitary officers during a protest, was part of former President Yahya Jammeh’s rule known for human rights abuses. The country has since established the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission to investigate crimes committed during Jammeh’s regime. While some perpetrators have been prosecuted, others, including Jammeh, remain outside the country. The government has started compensating victims, but many survivors, like Mbye, seek accountability and justice beyond monetary reparations.
