A French surgeon is on trial accused of raping or abusing 299 people, mostly children

Activist groups in France are rallying outside a courthouse in Vannes for the trial of former surgeon Joël Le Scouarnec, who is accused of raping or sexually abusing 299 victims, mostly children. Le Scouarnec faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, in addition to a previous 15-year sentence for similar crimes. The case has sparked calls to lift taboos around sexual abuse in France, as survivors recount their traumatic experiences and seek justice.
