On November 3, a boat carrying 49 migrants capsized off the coast of Libya, leading to the presumed deaths of 42 individuals, including many from Sudan, Somalia, Cameroon, and Nigeria. Seven survivors were rescued after six days at sea. This tragedy contributes to over 1,000 migrant deaths in the central Mediterranean this year, highlighting the urgent need for improved migration safety and effective search and rescue operations, as emphasized by the IOM. Human rights abuses by Libya’s coastguard further complicate the situation, prompting European organizations to suspend cooperation with Libyan authorities.
