As the world faces climate change, population growth, and water scarcity, the reliance on treated wastewater is increasing. However, a study led by researchers at Harvard and New York University revealed high levels of harmful PFAS chemicals in wastewater samples nationwide, which are known as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and links to cancer. The study found that wastewater treatment facilities are not effectively removing these chemicals, leading to contamination of drinking water supplies for up to 23 million Americans, highlighting the urgent need to address ongoing sources of PFAS contamination.
