Ford Motor Co. is recalling 254,640 Lincoln and Explorer vehicles due to a software malfunction that may affect the rearview camera and other safety features. The recall involves select 2022 to 2025 Lincoln Navigator, 2024 to 2025 Lincoln Nautilus, 2025 Lincoln Aviator, and 2025 Explorer models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the image processing software could reset unexpectedly, causing a loss of rearview camera functionality and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as pre-collision assist and lane-keeping assist. This malfunction may hinder drivers’ ability to detect potential hazards and increase the likelihood of accidents. Affected vehicle owners can receive a free software update at dealerships or via an over-the-air update, with notification letters scheduled to be mailed on March 30. The recall number is 26V165.

Why It Matters

This recall highlights ongoing concerns about vehicle safety and the reliability of advanced technology in modern automobiles. Software issues have become more prevalent as vehicles increasingly rely on complex systems for safety features. The NHTSA emphasizes the importance of addressing such defects to prevent accidents, given that vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury and death in many countries. Past recalls related to software malfunctions have underscored the need for vigilant monitoring and prompt action by manufacturers to ensure driver and passenger safety.
