Numerous speeding fines are expected to be forgiven after residents fleeing bushfires were captured by speed cameras.
Beaufort locals received a “leave now” bushfire alert on February 13 as fires devastated Western Victoria.
However, 31 motorists were recorded by speed cameras as they evacuated the area for safety.
Victoria Police have confirmed that while one camera was in operation, fines are “unlikely” to be issued.
“Victoria Police has a history of not issuing fines of this nature during natural disasters when justified,” said a Victoria Police spokesperson.
“While we will assess any offenses, it is improbable that fines will be issued at this location on this day.
“There were a total of 31 detections, none of which have been processed.”
This declaration comes after Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed that over 14,000ha in Victoria’s west were affected by fires.
“‘Leave immediately’ and ‘not safe to return’ alerts are still in effect for several communities,” the Premier shared on Instagram on February 23.
“Tonight, my thoughts are with everyone who cannot return home. And with all the incredible first responders who will be working hard over the weekend to ensure everyone’s safety.
“Please take precautions. And stay informed about the alerts: emergency.vic.gov.au”
