The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of four new flavored nicotine pouch products, increasing the total number of approved products to 30. The brand “on!” is among those recently approved, following a decision aimed at promoting this rapidly expanding sector of the nicotine market. Last week, the White House highlighted the nicotine pouch brand ZYN in a TikTok video featuring military leadership discussing nicotine use among service members. In June, ZYN received FDA clearance to market 20 products with a “Modified Risk Tobacco Product” label, suggesting a lower risk of serious health issues compared to traditional tobacco products. However, health advocates express concerns about the appeal of flavored pouches to youth, as nicotine pouches are the second most commonly used tobacco product among high school students, trailing only e-cigarettes.
Why It Matters
The surge in nicotine pouch usage raises public health concerns, particularly regarding addiction among young users. The CDC Foundation reports a 250% increase in monthly sales of nicotine pouches from January 2023 to August 2025. While the legal age for purchasing these products is 21, a significant number of adolescents reported using them in the latest National Youth Tobacco Survey. Furthermore, nicotine pouches have been banned in 16 countries, underscoring global health concerns surrounding emerging tobacco products. The FDA’s recent approvals and the ongoing rise in usage highlight a critical need for further research into the long-term impacts of these products on health, especially among young people.
