FBI hacked thousands of computers to make malware uninstall itself

The FBI hacked 4,200 computers in the US to remove PlugX, a malware used by Chinese state-backed hackers to steal information. The hackers, known as “Mustang Panda” and “Twill Typhoon”, infected computers through USB ports and remotely accessed victims’ files. The FBI collaborated with French law enforcement to access the command-and-control server and delete the malware from infected computers, following a successful operation in September 2023.
