Existing-Home Sales in 2024 Were Slowest in Decades Amid High Mortgage Rates

High interest rates dampened U.S. home sales in 2022, with only four million previously owned homes sold, the lowest since 1995. While sales saw a slight increase in December due to lower mortgage rates, rates have since risen to 7 percent, hindering a significant recovery. The housing market may slowly normalize as inventories increase, but without a decrease in mortgage rates, sales are expected to remain weak.
