Director Fede Alvarez’s highly anticipated new film in the Alien franchise now has an official title. Alien: Romulus is the latest addition to the xenomorph canon, and fans are eagerly awaiting a trailer reveal. The title was officially announced in Disney’s updated release schedule following the Q1 Earnings report. Originally slated for a Hulu debut, the movie is now set for a theatrical release on August 16, 2024, which is a promising sign for its quality. Fans are eagerly waiting for the trailer, which Hollywood scooper Daniel Richtman says is ready for release in the coming weeks.
The film will focus on a group of young characters in peril, a theme that Alvarez is known for in his previous works like Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe. The cast, which includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, Aileen Wu, and Isabela Merced, will face off against the iconic Xenomorph in a fight for survival on a distant colony. Test screening reports suggest that Spaeny will play the Ripley-esque lead, with Jonsson portraying her Android brother. The film is said to be very violent, with a horrifying new twist on the Facehuggers.
Alvarez’s film is not connected to previous Alien movies, except for the presence of the Xenomorph. Set between the events of Alien and Aliens, the story is shrouded in mystery, but promises to provide a fresh take on the franchise. Despite the young cast, Alien: Romulus is expected to receive an R-rating for its intense horror elements. Ridley Scott has already seen the completed film and praised it as “f**king great.”
While Alien: Romulus is headed for a theatrical release, fans can also look forward to a new Alien TV series by Noah Hawley on Hulu. The series is set on Earth in the future and will explore the world of the Weylan-Yutani corporation. With a mix of horror and suspense, Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus promises to be a thrilling addition to the beloved franchise.
