Welsh football officials are optimistic that qualifying for major tournaments will significantly increase the number of girls playing football in the nation, following a similar trend in England where there was a 140% rise in female participation after Euro 2022 success. The Football Association of Wales has seen a steady growth in girls’ participation since the men’s team’s success in reaching the European Championship semi-finals in 2016, with a target of 20,000 players by 2026 close to being achieved. Despite progress, concerns remain about Wales being “culturally behind” in supporting the women’s game, with efforts needed to ensure equal opportunities and recognition for female players.
