Ursula von der Leyen, a German conservative politician, has been confirmed as the lead candidate for the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) to become the next President of the European Commission after the elections in June.
The 65-year-old politician, considered by her party as the face of the EU on the global stage, received 400 votes in favor and 89 votes against. However, more than one-third of EPP delegates did not vote.
Some who voted against her nomination, such as the French Republicans, criticized her “technocratic drift” and labeled her as the candidate of liberal President Emmanuel Macron.
However, her reelection was almost certain as she faced no opponents within her party.
Following the European Parliament elections in June, the EPP is expected to remain the largest group in the European Parliament, despite the anticipated rise in support for far-right and extremist parties.
Von der Leyen addressed conservative delegates in Bucharest during the EPP congress, warning of the challenges Europe faces from populists, nationalists, and demagogues across the continent.
EPP leader Manfred Weber also emphasized the threats facing Europe and criticized other political parties for their lack of strong leadership.
Experience and Determination
If confirmed by EU leaders and MEPs, von der Leyen is expected to face a second term marked by economic concerns, geopolitical tensions, and international conflicts.
While some EU leaders have criticized her stance on certain issues, others see her experience in security and defense as a strength for the EU.
With her background as a former defense minister and international respect, von der Leyen is seen as a symbol of stability for the EU.
Despite recent criticism of her climate proposals, von der Leyen is supported by the center-right party to lead the EU agenda for the next four years.
Von der Leyen ‘the farmers’ friend’
The EPP has embraced von der Leyen as their candidate despite some criticism from party members about her environmental policies.
The party has shifted focus towards supporting farmers and addressing concerns about defense and migration in the electoral campaign.
Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of supporting farmers and simplifying regulations for businesses in Europe.
Leaders within the EPP stressed the need for innovation and deregulation to ensure the future success of the EU.
