The Musk Foundation has made various donations including $55 million to assist a major SpaceX customer fulfill a charitable pledge, millions to Cameron County, Texas after a rocket explosion, and contributions to two schools associated with his businesses. One school is situated within a SpaceX facility, while the other is located near a new neighborhood for Musk’s employees.
Benjamin Soskis, a philanthropy researcher at the Urban Institute, noted the contrast between Musk’s public image and his limited philanthropic activities. While other billionaires focus on making a broad impact on society, Soskis mentioned that Musk’s foundation lacks a clear direction or focus beyond his business ventures.

A school for his children
In 2001, Mr. Musk and his brother Kimbal established the Musk Foundation, just before the sale of PayPal to eBay for $1.5 billion. Musk funded the foundation with around $2 million worth of eBay shares from the sale, totaling over $175 million. Initially, the foundation’s website featured animations and encouraged grant applications, but by 2005, it was revamped with a simple black text stating its focus on science education, pediatric health, and clean energy.
The foundation provided no contact information and still doesn’t. Despite Forbes estimating Musk’s net worth at over $10 billion in September 2014, largely due to his Tesla stock, he made minimal contributions to his foundation. Tax records from that year show the foundation had only $40,121 in funds.
