In January 2022, eight-year-old Elizabeth Struhs died after her parents, encouraged by a religious sect called “the Saints,” withheld her insulin medication in the belief that God would heal her. Her parents, along with 12 other group members, were found guilty of manslaughter and received jail terms ranging from six to 14 years. The group leader, Brendan Stevens, received 13 years in prison. Elizabeth’s father eventually stopped her insulin treatment under pressure from the group, leading to her death. Justice Martin Burns criticized the group for their actions, stating that they took the life of a vibrant child who should have lived a full life.
