A jury found the three ex-military officers guilty of killing the journalists who were making a documentary on El Salvador’s civil war at the time.
Three former officers of El Salvador’s military were convicted for the 1982 killings of four Dutch journalists during the civil war. Colonel Jose Guillermo Garcia, Colonel Francisco Moran, and Colonel Mario Adalberto Reyes Mena were each sentenced to 15 years in prison, with Reyes still residing in the US despite an extradition request. The case was reopened in 2018 after a Supreme Court ruling invalidated a previous amnesty, leading to renewed calls for accountability from the victims’ families and international entities.
